Letter: Tea party takes country hostage
Tea party takes country hostage
Speaker Boehner could have prevented and can now reverse the government shutdown. There are enough votes in the House of Representatives to pass a continuing resolution that funds the U.S.government (at the sequester level) and the government would be open.
Instead, Speaker Boehner is capitulating to the radical wing of his Republican Party, otherwise known as the tea party. If Speaker Boehner brings the continuing resolution to the House floor for a vote, he is in peril of losing his speakership. Speaker Boehner and his tea party Republican cohorts are holding the funding of our government hostage unless they can repeal or delay ObamaCare. The official congressional website of our own Congressman Tipton prominently displays a graphic that reads: “OBAMACARE, Defund, Repeal, Replace.”
In 2008, President Obama ran on the issue of affordable health care for uninsured Americans. He was re-elected in 2012 after Obamacare was passed. The U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act.Yet elections do not matter to the tea party, and Supreme Court decisions do not matter to them, either.
The tea party Republicans are terrified that the implementation of Obamacare will be a success, and they will do anything to preclude the working poor and uninsured Americans from being able to purchase affordable health care insurance. They are so desperate they have chosen to hold the country hostage.
The affordable health insurance coverage does not go into effect until next year but Coloradoans can sign up for the Colorado affordable health insurance now at: http://connectforhealthco.com/.
Author James Fallows, of the The Atlantic, has written on the false equivalency of the media in attributing blame over the government shutdown. “As a matter of journalism, any story that presents the disagreements as a “standoff,” a “showdown,” a “failure of leadership,” a sign of “partisan gridlock,” or any of the other usual terms for political disagreement, represents a failure of journalism and an inability to see or describe what is going on.”
People remark that President Obama is to blame, or if he would merely choose to lead — we would get out of this shutdown. Those people are not admitting the reality that you cannot negotiate with people who choose party over country. The tea party has simply chosen to hold all of us hostage so those less fortunate cannot receive affordable health care.
