Letter: Sunk by social issues
I simply cannot vote for any Republican even though I am in agreement with many of their economic and foreign positions. The Republican positions on abortion, Planned Parenthood, LBGT rights, gun control, immigration and other social issues are simply not justified or acceptable. In addition, Republicans have become the party of “no.” They block any legislation proposed by the Democrats instead of compromising to make things work. They characterize every decision and action made by Democrats in the most negative way possible. They constantly disrespect and badmouth the president and every prominent Democrat in ways that are more appropriate for an adolescent bully.
Two recent examples show the character of the Republicans. First is the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Garland is admittedly highly qualified and respected by both parties. However, the Republicans refused to even consider a vote on his nomination, despite their duty to do so, merely because he was nominated by a Democratic president.
The second example is Sen. Marco Rubio’s position that pregnant women who contract the Zika virus should not be allowed to get an abortion despite concerns about birth defects. How dare he impose this choice on others? Perhaps he should be forced to adopt and raise a child with severe defects.
Until the Republican Party adopts an agenda more respectful of individual rights, cooperates with others to make things better for all of us and stops the negativity and relentless, hateful bashing of people on the other side, I can never vote for any Republican.
