Letter: Stop midvalley high-density growth
Traffic backup is increasing in the midvalley due to developers’ plans to increase the density of their subdivisions. The Roaring Fork Valley Regional Planning Commission and Eagle County are now approving developments with double the density of the current subdivisions in the area.
The Fields subdivision, located about a mile west of City Market, is asking to increase its density by asking for its planned-unit-development application to be changed from the current rural residential zone to a multifamily zone. It is cramming 72 duplex units and 26 single-family homes into less than 20 acres! This is twice the density of the surrounding subdivisions. This Fields subdivision could add another 160 vehicles to the already congested midvalley traffic. According to the Fields developers, most of the errands would require a car due to the distance from the center of El Jebel. With the Tree Farm development of 400 units, and other developments on line for approval in the midvalley, we could experience gridlock similar to what Aspen has had to deal with for the past 25 years.
How can we stop the out-of-control growth being approved for the midvalley? I agree with my neighbors and recent commentaries in the papers that it is time to stop any further high-density growth in El Jebel.
