Letter: Science center is a perfect fit
Science center is a perfect fit
I am a pretty vocal supporter of the Aspen Science Center’s proposal to be granted use of the Old Power House for its new home. Some would say that I am biased as a teacher and parent, but my thinking about this space and who will occupy it goes far beyond those roles.
I have attended most City Council meetings relating to this matter and also have taken the time to read through all of the proposals submitted by the finalists. All of the ideas are good, and tremendous effort was put into each proposal. As a budding Internet entrepreneur, I see the value in incubator spaces and media accessibility. As a proponent of community and a lover of the arts, I also see how a gathering place and another performing-arts center would enhance our town. If the debate were for any other space, I could easily find myself backing any of those ideas.
However, the Old Power House building, itself, is what really matters to me here. Its history can be visibly understood through a scientific lens, and its location ties together everything that the city has tried so hard to develop for people of all generations. In last week’s meeting, I heard Aspen Science Center proposers offering to incorporate aspects of the original Power House characteristics into their designs so that the history of the building could be highlighted. I also saw the architectural renderings in the proposal lay out a phenomenal plan for making use of the surrounding grounds when other groups didn’t even attempt to call attention to these assets. These are just some of the features that will create the “wow” factor that the council keeps talking about.
I sense that other city spaces will open up and the other candidates will find the perfect spot for their ideas. Yet this old building needs an occupant that can really show it off, and the Aspen Science Center can do just that. Letting that group show us all what is possible would be an incredible gift to give the community.
