Saluting our soldiers

The 238th birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps will be observed at 11 a.m. Sunday at the Aspen Grove Cemetery flagpole in Aspen. Marines and friends of the

Corps are invited. A "no host" luncheon will follow at the Red Onion after the ceremony.

Veterans Day ceremonies will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Roaring

Fork Veterans Memorial, located on the east side of the Pitkin County Court House, at 506 E. Main Street. The public is cordially invited. Veterans are encouraged to wear items of military memorabilia.

Aspen Elks Lodge #224 will host its annual Veterans Day Luncheon following the ceremony. Grassroots Community TV Channel 12 will run interviews of local veterans participating in the Library of Congress Veterans History Project throughout the day.

At 4 p.m. at the Colorado Mountain College Spring Valley Campus Theater, the 100-minute PBS award-winning film "Veterans Day 11-11-11" will be shown. One of the film's 15 contributing storytellers is the new interim pro photo CMC assistant photography teacher Suzanne Popovich Chandler at the Walter Isaacson School for New Media. Chandler's goal is to inspire CMC students and the Roaring Fork community to use media to honor veterans and shed light on a variety of worthy causes. Veterans and the public are invited to the showing.
