Letter: Right-wing rule
Give credit where it’s due. American conservatives now control the federal government and they are achieving every single one of their goals. In a chess game, a few key pieces can win the match. The right has the majority in the House of Representatives, a stalemate in the Senate, the Supreme Court majority and the media.
As long-time conservative enforcer Grover Norquist famously said: We want to shrink government and drown it in a bathtub.
So now we’ve had the sequester, the shutdown, and the threat to default on the government’s credit obligations. As a result, federal spending is down by some 7 percent as a part of GDP (by some reporting). If you looked carefully at which areas of government were having the biggest layoffs, it’s the departments that the right has targeted for destruction. While defense and intelligence got a pass (and the lawmakers’ own salaries), education, health, interior and the IRS were out.
The president is reduced to making speeches no one listens to. Virtually no legislation is coming out of Congress. The public thinks the president and “Congress” are useless. The media reinforces this position.
We are constantly hearing that there is a need to “compromise.” What is really at stake is not compromise; it is surrender. The political right wants to cut or privatize government programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Head Start, food stamps and unemployment support. As one reporter put it, this is tantamount to saying give me your car or I’ll burn down your house.
Make no mistake: This is the governance that is taking place in our country today. This is happening in local school boards to the federal government.
What Americans need to ask themselves is this: Who really benefits under this attack on American society?
