Letter: Rec center is pet project

Rec center is pet project

Taxes should be used for the greater good of all. Unfortunately, Crown Mountain Park plans to use taxpayer money to subsidize a membership club. That’s bad news for us folks struggling to live here.

Owners of homes valued at $800,000 will be taxed at least $7,200 over the next 15 years, but that won’t even get most people in the door of the gym. Membership fees start $540 per year for adults (not including the class fees).

Renters are not immune either since property owners often have to raise rent to cover all these increases. We will be paying more in property taxes to the Crown Mountain Recreational District than for those emergency services provided by the Basalt Fire Protection District!

This plan forces everyone to pay but only benefits those who can afford to use the facility. And this is not a one-time payment; this vote will affect taxpayers for the rest of our lives in the area.

Crown Mountain Park needs to find another way to fund this pet project.
