Randy’s spirit lives on

Dear Editor:

Randy loved to tease mercilessly.

As I reread the my many emails that Randy Udall was patient to exchange with me over the past six years, I take the ribbing as a compliment. These emails are an archive of lessons as Randy tutored and inspired my understanding of energy — from policy to CO2 equivalents. These messages — sharp and insightful and explanatory — are why my career evolved to focus on energy.

There are likely other young people who would say this, too. Randy spoke at Sopris Foundation conferences and conferred with John McBride and me on numerous occasions, ever patient with our harebrained schemes to blow up second homes, or charge a carbon tax. Randy was always ready to explore new avenues, despite how improbable or challenging.

This clip from one such email he sent me stuck out: “I sometimes despair, as you know, of making much headway in our benighted and energy spoiled country. I’m happier outside, trying to figure out how to get through a week on 20 ounces of white gas, and dealing with the weather and the larger forces of nature.”

Randy is immortal. Yeah, I do believe this. Rarely, we meet someone whose effervescence is that clear. The force of the truth Randy voiced, and whose resonance every one of us felt, can only be called supernal. And as such, he never died. So I’ll be looking for signs of his spirit often, and around us.
