Questioning the direction of AVSC

Dear Editor:

Thanks for providing the article describing AVSC’s efforts to overhaul their facilities at Aspen Highlands (Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club upping its game,” May 10, The Aspen Times)

After reading Walt Evans’ (the club’s director of excellence) comment, “The enhancements also will make sure AVSC competitors have the tools they need to compete in today’s tough atmosphere,” I looked up AVSC’s mission statement:

“To provide all youth in the greater Roaring Fork Valley the opportunity to develop as athletes and as people through winter sports.”

The mission statement goes on to describe beliefs in opportunity, excellence and values. The ability to compete does not seem to be included in the vision of the AVSC organization (rightfully so).

If I had $15 million to spend and follow the AVSC motto, “great athletes, great kids,” I would probably direct those funds toward introducing the youth of the greater Roaring Fork Valley to winter sports rather than financing an elite few that may have a chance to compete in today’s tough atmosphere. I question the direction and efforts of this organization. Maybe they would be better served to develop a separate organization that focuses on the development of elite athletes.
