Positive arts and culture steps in Basalt

I am writing in response to the informative article in the Times concerning the growing arts presence in Basalt and the discussion of some of the proposals made to the Town Council.

As a member of both the Wyly Art Center board of directors and the Willits Center for the Arts board, I was pleased with the very positive reception by the Basalt Town Council at the recent work session to the proposals by both organizations concerning their respective plans for the future.

The expansion of the Wyly’s role in providing visual arts exhibitions, events and educational programs to the midvalley will greatly increase the cultural educational and economic opportunities for the community.

Likewise, the proposed arts facility at Willits will go a long way to fill the void of performing arts for residents in the midvalley.

Both organizations will present programs from local, regional and national talents on a year-round calendar for the benefit of our residents and visitors alike.

The town of Basalt is making a very positive and encouraging move in the right direction by committing to support these arts proposals and their implementation.

The council members and town staff are to be applauded for their insightful realization that arts and culture can have a major impact on the well being and vitality of the community and for their support of these goals.
