Letter: Petition for vote on hotel
Recently, Aspen City Council granted variances to Mark Hunt to build an affordable-lodging hotel on the gas station site across from Carl’s Pharmacy. The hotel is two-and-a-half times code size, has no setbacks nor on-site parking. The council could have referred this to the voters as per newly passed Referendum 1 but were opposed to the principle of Referendum 1 and gave Hunt carte blanche to build the hotel. It is supposed to be affordable, but has no restrictions on how much can be charged for a room. Here today as affordable and gone tomorrow as, well, $400 to $500, which is required for sustainable profit.
The petition does not reject the hotel but rather gives the Aspen community the ability to vote on the issue and express their opinions on the council’s decision to grant variances for the project. Sign the petition and let the people decide an issue that will have an impact on their lives.
Petition available at City Market from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
