Letter: Pave the rest of Rio Grande Trail
Pave the rest of Rio Grande Trail
My wife and I frequently ride road bikes up and down McLain Flats Road. I agree with Charles Israel that there is excessive traffic, speeding and lack of police presence (“McLain Flats traffic is dangerous,” Letters to the Editor, The Aspen Times, Aug. 14). I cringe when I am passed by drivers who cannot see oncoming traffic around blind curves.
However, I do not agree that the Rio Grande Trail, as it is presently composed, is a viable alternative for road biking to and from Aspen. The problem is that the last 2 miles of arguably one of the greatest 45-mile bike trails on the planet are not paved. Once there is a paved connection to either the Aspen Business Center trail (via a bridge) or a straight shot to Cemetery Lane, road bikers could be encouraged to use this safer option, thus avoiding McLain Flats or Highway 82.
This is one of those things that will be done sooner or later, so why not do it sooner?
