Letter: Patience needed for Basalt development
On Friday morning, I toured the Pan and Fork site with the Basalt Town Council, the mayor, Town Manager Mike Scanlon and Susan Phillips. An overwhelming feeling of sadness hit me as they showed me where the building will go. I find it hard to believe that some of these political people really think a massive 75,000-square-foot building will change Basalt in a good way. How will a wall of buildings blocking the river bring vitality?
What about the fact that we are trading the diversity we had in Basalt (with the trailer park owners) for a bunch of condos that only rich folks can afford? It is appalling to have displaced the Hispanic population in exchange for a gentrified Basalt. This should be a crime.
Where is the concern for valley work-force residents who would like to live in Basalt? What about affordable employee (deed-restricted) housing?
Why not be patient and wait till the right developer proposes to purchase Clark’s Market property? Moving forward on building a hotel on the Pan and Fork is wrong. Why not be patient and do it right? We only will get one shot at it.
The town needs to buy Roaring Fork Community Development Corp. property so it as control of what and how to go forward with this priceless piece of land.
I do not see how anyone can ignore how much emphasis is on Lowe’s proposal when it comes to the town’s planning process. The Downtown Area Advisory Committee report and our town planning survey are poorly represented in the planning and proposal.
These politicians are at a pivotal point in the decision-making process of Basalt’s future. It is important that you attend the next two Town Council meetings at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Town Hall for public comment and the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting Aug. 31 at the Basalt library.
