Letter: Orthopedic care at the hospital

This letter is written to clarify the status of orthopedic services in our community. First and foremost, we want to assure all that we are committed to the finest in orthopedic care for residents of and visitors to our valley both now and far into the future.

Earlier this year, Aspen Valley Hospital and physicians at Aspen Orthopaedic Associates began discussing employment options. Physician employment by hospitals is an evolving trend in medicine throughout the nation and helps to ensure the availability of local health care. Further, we believe consolidation will strengthen orthopedic services and allow the hospital and the doctors to capitalize on the strengths of both entities.

After many months of discussion — admittedly with some issues still to be resolved — we plan to finalize the framework for a new brand of orthopedic care by early 2016. We are confident that we will be better together than either organization as a stand-alone entity.

For now, your Aspen Orthopaedic Associates orthopedic surgeons continue to be Drs. Lindsay Harris, Stanley Gertzbein, Tom Pevny, Mark Purnell and Leelee von Stade. They can still be reached at 970-925-4141, and their offices continue to be located within the hospital and at the Midvalley Medical Center. In addition, hand surgeon Dr. Ann Golden sees patients at the hospital and in Basalt (at the After-Hours Medical Care facility). She can be reached at 970-544-1289. As always, an orthopedic surgeon is on call 24/7 for trauma care through the Aspen Valley Hospital emergency department.

In 2016, new orthopedic surgeons will be joining our team. In addition to expert surgical care, you can expect a new emphasis on specialization, timeliness, access and customer service. Our goal: to establish Aspen Valley Hospital as the hospital of choice for exemplary orthopedic care of all types.

CEO Dan Bonk, Dr. Ann Golden, Dr. Lindsay Harris, Dr. Tom Pevny, Dr. Mark Purnell and Dr. Leelee von Stade
