Letter: Not all support development in Basalt
As a longtime Basaltine, I have participated in many citizen committees convened to gather public input with the same result as the recent community project regarding the Pan and Fork property. The Basalt town staff went ahead, generally disregarding the public’s ideas, with planners, developers and managers.
In my opinion, it would be wonderful to take advantage of the natural spring and utilize that area as additional wetlands, keeping the view plane open. It’s quite wonderful having the expanse of river open along Two Rivers Road.
I voted for the lowest-density option, hoping for the most green space. Had there been a no-development choice, I would have made it. One group pushing hard for development does not mean that everyone supports it. My observation is that most of the people supporting the development of the Pan and Fork property have a financial interest in moving it along. Because potential profit is involved, they are most persistent, stack the meetings with like-minded people and are not tolerant of opposition. It can be daunting to attend meetings and speak up.
It is time to think about Basalt residents and what will benefit us most in the long run: riparian wetlands, river views and access, and recreational opportunity, or a hotel and additional storefronts.
Start a dialogue, stay on topic and be civil.
