Letter: New pavilion necessary for church’s mission

“The nature and purpose of the church is to influence people and communities by bringing life and teachings of Jesus Christ to life in every place and time. A local church community should be contagious. Everyone who belongs to that community should be reaching out both actively, with efforts to evangelize, and passively, with the examples of their lives.” — Matthew Kelly, “Rediscover Catholicism”

Kelly goes on to suggest that a church community that does almost no outreach will fade away. St. Mary’s houses the homeless in the winter, shares her offerings with the hungry, sends missionaries to the Philippines and helps heal angry souls like mine. She can do so much more. I believe the new pavilion is necessary for St. Mary’s to continue her mission. It is my hope the Aspen Historic Preservation Commission and the City Council understand and support her efforts.
