Letter: Need for new leadership
I am among a large contingent of Basalt residents who strongly support Rick Stevens for mayor. At this juncture of divided community priorities, Basalt simply needs the unifying balance of his leadership focus — leadership that balances public input and planning opportunities with affordability, balances listening with decisive and purposeful implementation and balances the sequencing of near-term improvements with long-range community goals.
In April, by invitation of the Town Council, the people of Basalt were asked to participate in an “Our Town” planning process. The people enthusiastically joined in droves to create ideas and planning sketches with intent to shape our towns’ future. This input was collated into planning consensus and submitted to the Town Council to be implemented according to the “will of the people.”
In the eight months following, this community planning consensus languished without traction — a void of council leadership only punctuated by divisive public comment focused on river-park issues. That and other situations, to me and many others, underscore the need for new leadership. That leadership needs to be guided by informed decision-making, leading to measurable community benefits. That describes change, and that is why I support Rick for mayor. I’ve known Rick for many years and have witnessed his principled caliber of even-handed leadership. His proven experience as former mayor and long-term councilman is only exceeded, in my opinion, by his commitment to a balanced prosperity for Basalt’s future!
It is my founded expectation that Rick and a reconstituted Town Council would together lead broadened focus on the basics of community well-being and enhanced vitality. Top among these are next-generation affordable housing, steerage toward civil consensus-building, sound and affordable fiscal management and (of course) workable strategies for the balanced implementation of a great, kick-ass river park!
A vote for Rick Stevens and like-motivated Town Council members is a vote for needed civic nourishment. Make your voice heard by voting!
Start a dialogue, stay on topic and be civil.
