Letter: Misrepresentations on lodge proposal

Main Street is Aspen’s last intact historic district maintaining her small-town character with one- or two-story structures (except our 19th-century iconic buildings and religious centers, which were intended to stand apart). If Base2 is voted in, it will forever change the development of our small town with its inappropriate variances: almost three times the allowed square footage, no setbacks, hollow promises and no guarantee for parking.

Misrepresentation by the city and the developer has been ongoing. They say 200-square-foot rooms would keep this hotel affordable. Don’t believe it! All over Europe, ski resorts have rooms this size, and they rent for $400 a night or more. We were given the same storyline on the Limelight, which was supposed to have “affordable rooms.” They rent out now for more than $500 a night. The size of units is no guarantee that we would have affordable rooms.

Guests from this so-called “affordable lodge” would dominate the street parking at the deli, the florist, the pet shop and the wine store.

I urge Aspen voters to keep what has made Aspen special over the decades, its small-town character, and vote “no” on Base2. “No” on 2A.
