Letter: Live in peace

Yes, it’s a crazy world, with groups of people who are set in their own ways, adhering to their portion of the whole, however large or small that may be. They set themselves up as different, as the “in” group, thereby denying the fullness of humanity. Counter to this, Joseph Campbell said, “Beyond the world of opposites is an unseen, but experienced, unity and identity in us all.” Wow, sounds like peace to me.

Campbell was pragmatic, too, saying: “When we talk about settling the world’s problems, we’re barking up the wrong tree. The world is perfect. It’s a mess. It has always been a mess.” And he could be quite expansive and environmental: “Today the planet is the only proper ‘in’ group.” I like that, and I think the fictional Don Matteo would agree.

May we live in cultural peace. May we live in peace.
