Letter: Let officials handle their own budgeting
At the last Pitkin County Board of Commissioners session, I spoke about restructuring and said both county Sheriff Joe DiSalvo and county Clerk and Recorder Janice K. Vos-Caudill should have their own finance departments.
Also let me add county Assessor Tom Isaac to this list of Pitkin County elected officials who should have their own finance departments.
These three elected county officials’ finance departments would be independent of the Pitkin County Board of Commissioners Finance Department.
And if the Board of Commissioners passed acts, rules or regulations that affected any of these three elected county officials, they could not be unfunded mandates.
Furthermore, these elected county officials would not be subjected to the stresses, strains and discourtesies they are subjected to by the Board of Commissioners when it comes to their budgetary needs and duties to fulfill their official workings. They should not be second-guessed nor hamstrung nor undermined, which leads to their weakening in the public arena to do their elected and sworn obligations to satisfy the public trust and well-being.
Now let the electorate debate and righteously resolve this finance-department issue in favor of DiSalvo, Vos-Caudill and Isaac.
In closing, I would like the caring public to send Isaac its well-wishes. He is hospitalized in Denver.
