Lemonade Day a family-business affair

Dear Editor:

About four years ago, my son, then 8 years old, asked if he could sell lemonade in front of the house. I gladly said yes, and we built a lemonade stand out of a single 4-foot by 8-foot piece of plywood.

He had a good first season and got so much more than a business lesson out of it. Next, I thought I’d create an exercise in public relations. We took pictures of the lemonade stand and sent them to the Post Independent along with a press release we wrote. The next day, the release, as well as the photo, was in the paper. Ian learned quickly about the value of P.R. That same day, Cindy Svatos from the Glenwood Downtown Market came to our door and asked if Ian would be interested in selling lemonade on Tuesday nights. Thanks to the Downtown Market’s support, he is now in his third season and has added close-up magic at his stand to attract customers. He has learned so much.

In addition to the obvious skills like money handling and bookkeeping, Ian has learned everything from profit and loss, art direction and sales to staffing and inventory control.

Even if he does not choose business as a profession, I am confident that all the things he has learned selling lemonade will benefit him for years to come. And I have experienced such joy in an activity we can share in together. We are enthusiastic supporters of Lemonade Day Roaring Fork Valley, and encourage families to do the same.
