Letter: In the candidate’s words
In the candidate’s words
Please allow me to take a few minutes of your time to introduce myself and ask for your vote. I was looking forward to a debate with my fellow commissioner candidate or even a series of questions to answer so you could get to know us better. Neither the debate nor published questions have happened, so I am reaching out by way of this letter.
I have spent a good deal of time in El Jebel and Basalt over the past five months getting to know the issues and meeting people. I knocked on just over 200 doors, visited most of the businesses and shook hands with people at the farmers market and outside City Market and Whole Foods. I heard loud and clear the request for better representation and communication for this part of Eagle County. As your commissioner, I will work to represent the whole county.
In this primary race, both candidates are running on the Democratic platform, so much of what we say may sound similar, based on the ideals of the Democratic Party. We both talk about economic diversity, protecting the environment, senior care and health care, but there are differences in how we prioritize, in our experiences and in skill set.
My experience on the Eagle County school board has prepared me for the job of county commissioner. I have spent the past seven years on the Eagle County school board, the past three as board president. I say this not to highlight my passion for education but to demonstrate my experience overseeing an organization the size of Eagle County. Most people are not aware that the school district is a larger organization, with a bigger budget and more employees, than the county. There are as many moving parts in the operation of a school district as there are in county government, all which are managed by the development and implementation of policy. I know how to lead within such a system.
My service on multiple volunteer and nonprofit boards has given me perspectives on collaboration, innovation, community service and the efficient use of limited resources. Strengthening collaborative opportunities will allow our community to reach our full potential. One of my strengths is my experience bringing people and agencies together to build solutions. I believe we can only solve our problems by working together. We need to hear from the loud and quiet voices, from the older and younger voices and from well-off and struggling people. Hear from everyone, ask questions, get the facts, and then make an informed decision.
I have been blessed to be able to spend my working life in jobs that I am passionate about. I will bring that passion to the job of commissioner. I will work hard for you not just to earn your vote but to listen and work to address your concerns.
