Letter: Help for working moms
As a former Aspen resident, I was always impressed by the many services offered in the Roaring Fork Valley that support local families. Sometimes employers here overlook one very simple service that can make a huge difference in influencing new mothers’ decisions to return to the workplace and facilitating the transition back to work for those who do decide to return. Setting aside “a place, other than a bathroom, that is shielded from view and free from intrusion from coworkers and the public, which may be used by an employee to express breast milk,” is not only an easy thing for employers with at least 50 employees to do — it is the law under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Returning to work as a new mom has enough challenges. Let’s all encourage Aspen Skiing Co. and other large employers in the valley to review their policies and take the steps necessary to welcome new mothers back to the office so we sustain the valuable contributions by women in our workforce.
