Letter: Give real support to clean energy
Dear Sen. Cory Gardner,
In your campaign for U.S. Senate last year, you stood in front of a wind farm and promised to be “a new generation, a new kind of Republican” who would work for a clean-energy future for Colorado and our country. So now I’m confused: At the very first opportunity to take bipartisan action to support clean energy, you voted not just once but twice against key clean-energy policies.
First, you voted against the amendment sponsored by North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp that supported a five-year extension of the Production Tax Credit for renewable energy. The credit is responsible for driving billions in investments in clean energy and creating tens of thousands of jobs. Congress allowed it to expire at the end of 2014, putting our clean-energy future at risk.
Second, you voted against an amendment sponsored by New Mexico Sen. Tom Udall that would have set a goal of 25 percent of the nation’s electricity generation to come from renewable energy by 2025. The Udall Renewable Energy Standard is a common-sense tool that will encourage continued growth of the clean-energy economy, support hundreds of thousands of jobs, put billions of dollars in investments in local communities, help stabilize electricity prices and add billions in local tax revenue. And it’s not an unrealistic goal. In fact, Colorado already has a higher Renewable Energy Standard of its own that was originally put into place by a majority of Colorado voters via a 2004 ballot initiative. The Renewable Energy Standard will build on the successes of state Renewable Portfolio Standards that have been helping transform the U.S. energy economy.
And to top things off, you also voted to force the approval of the dangerous Keystone XL pipeline, which will transport the dirtiest oil in the world straight through our agricultural heartland and do nothing to promote domestic clean energy.
We have a solution for you. Pass carbon fee and dividend legislation. Citizens’ Climate Lobby is structured to help this nonpartisan effort and has proven that it would stimulate the economy, create millions of jobs, defend our national security, improve our water and air for healthier lives and address human-influenced climate change. It is a win-win for all!
You told us you would work for a clean-energy future for Colorado and take bipartisan action to support clean energy. Prove to us you are a man of your word.
