Letter: Give Dr. Rodman the respect he deserves

I don’t know what happened between Aspen Valley Hospital and Dr. Bill Rodman. What I do know is that Rodman came here when our hospital had lost its surgeon and was in disarray. The hospital was staffed by rotating surgeons from Denver who were here for the job, not for the community. They were often arrogant and annoyed when called to the hospital, their paid vacation interrupted.

What I do know is that even when called in the middle of the night, Rodman is always available, organized and courteous. I know that Rodman built the trauma system and the trauma team we use today. When told that 1 in 5 trauma-team activations from the field were not warranted, his response was that the paramedics needed to call him more often. Better for him to be called needlessly than miss a critical trauma patient.

What I do know is that Rodman has served on numerous state boards and committees in furtherance of trauma care for the people of Colorado and Aspen at his own expense. He created a program so that no child in the valley who needed a helmet went without one. He raised his family in this valley was a member of the Aspen Valley Ski and Snowboard Club and this community.

I don’t know what happened between Aspen Valley Hospital and Rodman, but what I do know is that he deserves our respect for all he has done for this community for the past 20 years.
