Fired RFTA attorney apologizes to community

Dear Editor:

My name is Walter Mathews IV. From May 2010 to October, I was the general counsel for the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority.

However, I was terminated for misusing public funds for my own personal use. I sincerely and deeply regret what I have done. I would like to apologize for the harm that I caused to RFTA, the RFTA board of directors, the taxpayers of the Roaring Fork Valley and my family. As legal counsel to a public agency such as RFTA, part of my duties was to uphold the public trust, which I failed miserably to do.

RFTA is a great organization with exemplary employees. It was an honor and a privilege to be associated with such an outstanding organization. I only hope that in time the employees of RFTA, the RFTA board, CEO Dan Blankenship and the public will forgive me for what may be an inexcusable act on my part.

I also would like to apologize to my brethren in the legal profession. My actions have betrayed and dishonored the profession that I love. I took an oath to become an attorney in this great state of Colorado and I totally violated the principals for which that oath stands for.

Walter Mathews IV
