Letter: Fire averted

A burn in Hunter Creek Valley almost happened on its own Sept. 17. A careless hunter started a fire on the Deer Park Trail in the aforementioned wilderness. He must have discarded a cigarette or left an unattended camp fire 50 feet from the trail. One of our party combatted the flames and came back to camp to inform us. Two of us took a shovel and an ax and headed for the fire. The last two saddled two mules and packed water in plastic pack saddles. The fire was extinguished and doused with water. We made it back to camp to catch the fourth quarter of the Broncos game!
