Letter: Farewell to a hero

Dear Editor:

Jill Kane (or as all of us know her, Mrs. Kane) taught for 26 years in the Basalt school system and always made a lasting impression on the kids she interacted with. She positively impacted our personal and professional lives in so many ways that I couldn’t possibly detail all of them in this letter.

Mrs. Kane graduated with her master’s degree in special education from the University of Northern Colorado and began her teaching career at Basalt shortly thereafter. She started working in the special-needs department, transitioned into business-management curriculum and now continues to work with special-needs children. Many of us learned how to type, how to balance a checkbook and basic business principles such as leadership, delegation and public speaking in her classes. On one assignment, Mrs. Kane had us type the lyrics to our favorite songs and then perform the entire songs in front of the class on stage.

Mrs. Kane didn’t only teach at Basalt High School — she was the director of the Future Business Leaders of America program as well as running the accounting books for her and her husband’s business, Two Rivers Cafe, for close to 30 years. Additionally, she’s the special-needs coordinator for Bridges High School in Carbondale.

Jill Kane has dedicated her professional working life to helping others learn the skills they need to succeed in their lives, and for that, we thank you!

On behalf of 26 years of Basalt High School students, we wish you well in retirement and look forward to seeing you continue to thrive outside the walls of BHS.
