Letter: Corralled into choosing development
Today, the public is invited to comment on proposed master-plan amendments and development options in Basalt. The meeting is at the Basalt Public Library beginning at 5:30 p.m.
The public can expect to be herded toward development options. This will be done by showing different development scenarios in which a lot of development is one option that makes a lesser development option look good. A good example of this being done was in the “Our Town” planning process, in which the public was given three development options for the Pan and Fork property to vote on. There wasn’t an option for no development, and so most people chose the least-development option. The public only got to vote FOR development.
I recently overheard a town staff member say that the public wanted that particular development option. That option was the least development, and it is not known if the public actually wanted it or if they would have chosen even less development.
If you go to the meeting, remember that you don’t have to accept any of the development schemes.
Start a dialogue, stay on topic and be civil.
If you don't follow the rules, your comment may be deleted.
