Letter: Commissioners should reverse previous zoning approvals
What? According to the Aspen Daily News on Feb. 13, the Pitkin Board of County Commissioners have denied a zoning variance application to build 12,000 more square feet in agricultural buildings than current zoning allows in Lower River Road. The denial was issued quoting the legal argument that such construction is only considered for “existing agricultural operations looking to expand, not to new operations.”
Yet, only a very short time ago the Pitkin Board of County Commissioners (with the laudable exception of George Newman) approved over 35,000 square feet of exactly that same type of construction on a property with no existing agricultural operations. Despite valid concerns raised by neighbors, representing over 140 residents, and also the mayor of Basalt representing the Town of Basalt, they just went right ahead and approved a Whole Foods-sized variance of exactly the type they are now denying!
I ask that the board immediately reverse their previous approvals based on their current interpretation of the law.
