Letter: Changes on the horizon for Aspen Chapel

After more than 35 years in service to the Aspen Chapel, Rev. Dr. Gregg Anderson shared his desire to retire from being the full-time chaplain. For the past two years, we have been in the process of creating a plan to allow Anderson to become chaplain emeritus and the chapel to continue as a center of community and spiritual exploration.

Anderson has helped build a solid foundation for the future of the chapel, without which the next 35 years would not be possible.

This foundation includes:

• Welcoming thousands of locals, part-time residents and visitors — who are all on their personal spiritual journeys — through the open doors of the Aspen Chapel.

• Thousands of weddings, baptisms and memorials.

• Spiritual programs with Ed Bastian and Spiritual Paths, Lexie Potamkin and the Tibetan Monks, Cynthia Bourgeault and the Aspen Wisdom School, Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Ron James and Trevor Lewis.

• A broad vision for the chapel to create an inter-spiritual community with roots based in progressive Christianity.

• A long-term relationship with the Aspen Jewish Congregation to share the Aspen Chapel worship and education spaces.

Anderson has done all this, and so much more.

Change is always uncertain, and it is also, at the very same time, equally inspiring and filled with possibility. We look forward to the coming months as the chapel searches for a new spiritual leader. We also are excited for Anderson to take some time off to travel, to write and to stay involved with the Aspen Chapel as chaplain emeritus.
