Letter: Be cautious of election season scams

With the presidential election season upon us, many organizations are executing outreach to voters. State and county election officials have received complaints from Colorado voters who are concerned about phone calls that appear to be efforts to obtain personal and sensitive information.

Recently, an organization has been making phone calls and presenting themselves as being from “Go Vote Colorado.” During the call, voters are advised their registration is incorrect and needs to be updated before they can receive a ballot for the November election. Some voters believe the Secretary of State is somehow involved because that name is similar to the web address of the Secretary of State’s online voter-registration system (www.govotecolorado.com).

The Secretary of State’s Office does not contact individual voters regarding voter-registration issues except to respond to inquiries initiated by voters themselves. The Pitkin County Elections staff will always announce who they are and state the purpose of business, which usually will be in response to a form or request submitted to the office that staff must address for further clarification.

The Pitkin County Elections staff and I remind everyone not to disclose sensitive personal information, such as full date of birth, driver’s license or state-issued ID numbers, or Social Security numbers to any person or organization they do not know and trust, whether by telephone or otherwise. If you ever have any doubts, hang up and call us at 970-429-2732.

Additionally, legitimate organizations such as the Voter Participation Center and the Secretary of State’s Office are conducting targeted mailings to individuals who they believe are eligible to register to vote, but have not done so. Please take the time now and go to the Pitkin County Elections website at http://www.pitkinvotes.com, or http://www.govotecolorado.com, to privately manage your voter record or mail your completed registration to 501 E. Hyman Ave., Suite 106, Aspen, CO 81611, where we will properly process your voter-registration information.

Protect your private information! Go online to http://www.pitkinvotes.com, and don’t share your information over the phone!

Janice K. Vos Caudill

Pitkin County clerk and recorder
