Letter: Base Camp forever
November 17, 2015
I know this time of year everyone is asking you to give for this that and the other thing, so here is one more request, but this one is different. I am asking for a donation to help save a very special place in Marble forever! There is a piece of land that has had a positive effect and, I venture to say, even changed kids for the past 48 years. Eighth-grade outdoor education takes place at Base Camp. Outdoor education is a rite of passage, it builds confidence, it is a program that sets us apart from other schools, it is a part of our culture. This special week in the woods instills the love of nature and it pushes everyone beyond what they think they are capable of and out the other side. Outdoor-education experiences give kids skills that they can fall back on and use daily for the rest of their lives. If we let this opportunity to purchase this land in Marble slip through our hands, it will be gone forever, and there is no going back. But with your donation, kids up and down the Roaring Fork Valley can continue to use it forever. Yes — forever! Almost nothing is forever, but this will be if the community can raise $200,000 by Dec. 15. This magical and beautiful land will be open space forever. Please consider donating in honor or memory of someone who loves to empower others, someone in your life who cares about the earth or someone very young who will benefit by adventuring on this property forever. Donate by going to http://www.avlt.org; no donation is too small.
