Letter (Aug. 26): Great music, great race
August 26, 2013
Great music, great race
No question, special events bring people and economic vitality to Aspen especially in the summer time, and this past week we experienced two "winners."
First, the wonderful Aspen Music Festival closed out its 2013 season with terrific concerts and great music over the weekend. The festival's eight-week run brings students, teachers and professors, and many music fans to Aspen. They stay in our hotels, they spend money in our shops and restaurants, and they bring a vitality to Aspen that is a major part of our summer season. Thanks go out to Alan Fletcher and his staff, Director Robert Spano and all the support people who make the festival such an amazing event each season. It was terrific again — so thanks again!
The other grand event this past week was the USA Pro Challenge. Wow, what fun to see those 120 racers flying through downtown Aspen, through Snowmass, and back through town all over again. On Tuesday we were on hand and out front with most of our hotel guests as the riders first paraded past our Aspen Square front doors twice, then one final time as the race was on and they headed up to all the craziness on Independence Pass. What a thrill to see it all. And, how fun to be part of the festival in the park for two days.
Special thanks go out to Nancy Leslie of the city of Aspen, Bill Tomcich from Stay Aspen/Snowmass, Debbie Braun of the Aspen Chamber Resort Association, our local public safety people, our friends in Snowmass, and all who helped with the arrangements and services.

The bike race brought people to town, and our local lodging properties were busy if not full. There was activity in town as people gathered all along the race routes to cheer on the riders. How great to see local rider Tejay Van Garderen do so well! We know there was some disruption with road closures and detours, but the pay-off is so great with world-wide TV coverage and priceless PR that showed off Aspen and Snowmass so wonderfully. And, I know from our own hotel, that people came up, spent the night, and were here to watch the racing. Everyone worked hard to mitigate the inconveniences, and it worked.
Thanks to all who played a part in making our summer a grand success, especially this past week. Truly, Aspen is one special place!
