All hands on deck

Dear Editor:

One of Crown Mountain Park’s baseball infields was in need of rebuilding, and with a generous grant from the Mid Valley Metro District, this became a reality. After several days of excavation, a work day was held that involved both fields and an impressive army of little leaguers.

More than 50 kids and parents showed up (just as the Easter Bunny had finished egg-hunt deliveries) and were put to work with shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows. With new infield dirt, fences repaired, bases anchored firmly and an outfield fence installed, the baseball season is now newly under way. Thank you to all who were involved to help make this a great community event; we look forward to this becoming an annual get together.

Thank you to the following people; without your donations, sponsorships and hard work; this could not have happened. Thank you, Bill Reynolds and Mid Valley Metro District, for the generous grant for this project. Thank you, Travis Stewart and Western Slope Materials, for deliveries of sponsored infield mix. A huge thank-you goes to Noel and John Crawford, from Crawford Properties, for lending your knowledgeable advice and hardworking attitudes to the project. Thank you to staff Mark Hinchcliffe and Josh Wolfe for your tireless efforts. Thank you to the staff at Wagner Rents for your equipment for the week; it was a pleasure working with you.

These fields will be buzzing with a variety of baseball and softball games from spring through fall, for Little League, to recreational kids softball and baseball leagues, to adult softball and kickball leagues. We look forward to seeing you out on the diamond.

Josh rules

Dear Editor:

A big thank-you to Big Wrap’s very own Josh Tankersley! He recently took the time to come out in this crazy weather to coach and teach us new ways to shoot and get more power, so we’re more confident and hopefully get a few wins as the seventh- and eighth-grade Aspen girls lacrosse team! Josh came from the East Coast, and his game experience and talent is incredible! Josh has made a big hit with the girls of the Aspen Lacrosse Club! Thank you, Josh, for giving back!

A great performance

Dear Editor:

We laughed our way through Colorado Mountain College’s production of “Bleacher Bums.” I admit that my original intention for going was to see my friend Brad Moore as one of the Chicago Cubs bleacher bums. As the show progressed, however, it became clear that there were many stars in this show.

I am continually impressed with the amount of talent in our valley. Gary Ketzenbarger did an excellent job of casting this show with both local professionals and students of CMC’s theatre program.

If you haven’t made it to one of CMC’s theater productions in Glenwood Springs, now is the time to treat yourself to a great and fun show. Thank you, CMC Theatre!

An A+ for BB’s Kitchen

Dear Editor:

The Buddy Program would like to thank BB’s Kitchen and owner Bruce Berger for hosting our April Family Night Out.

Each month, the Buddy Program selects one of our families to enjoy an all-expenses-paid dinner at a fantastic local restaurant, as a way of celebrating their involvement in the Buddy Program and giving them a change to relax and enjoy themselves. This is an amazing opportunity for them to come together as a family and enjoy a quality meal out.

BB’s Kitchen is located in the heart of Aspen, only a block away from Gondola Plaza, with stunning views of Aspen Mountain from their second floor patio. BB’s offers contemporary American cuisine with a twist and fills the need for both casual dining and excellent food.

The Buddy Program would like to express its sincere gratitude to Bruce, executive chef Katie Lorenzen and BB’s Kitchen for sponsoring the evening.

Thank you, Dick Miller

Dear Editor:

I, on behalf of Boy Scout Troop 242, of Basalt, would like to thank Dick Miller, of the Aspen Elks Lodge for his dedication to our troop. The Elks always have been supportive of Troop 242, but Dick goes above and beyond in his efforts on behalf of our troop.

For example, this is the third year running that Dick has organized and supervised four fundraising dinners at the Elks Lodge in Aspen. Current scouts serve as waiters, and all proceeds are used by the scouts for outings such as summer camp and Jamboree. Although three of these dinners already have passed, we look forward to working with Dick again. Thanks for all you do, Mr. Miller!

Future’s bright for Community School

Dear Editor:

I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the Aspen Community School for many reasons. As a newer teacher at the Aspen Community School, I have been amazed at the selfless effort and dedication that goes into every aspect of the organization, from parents, staff and community members alike.

It is obvious that for many years, hard work coupled with a desire to provide individual attention to meet all students’ needs is a reflection of a true community school. I knew when I accepted this position that somehow this was going to be best place that I had ever taught, and I am proud to say that in 27 years as an educator in Colorado, Aspen Community School gets my vote!

Those who have contributed to the success of the capital campaign have invested in the continued success of a school that walks their talk, holding standards high, yet providing for individual differences. You certainly cannot be thanked enough for believing! With the amazing leadership, the supportive parents and unique student body, it will be exciting to see what the future holds!

Thank you, Whole Foods

Dear Editor:

I would like to thank Whole Foods Market in Basalt for hosting our Aspen Meatless Monday event at their store last Monday evening. Kristi Manns, the Health Starts Here coordinator for Whole Foods, offered suggestions on how to stock your pantry with the most nutritious and healthy foods for fast and easy eating. Her passion and expertise inspired all of us! The workshop was followed by a healthy potluck dinner outside in the park.

After working with Whole Foods on this event, it is clear that they walk the talk when it comes to providing high-quality, healthy food and they strongly support their local community. Along with Kristi, who led the workshop, I would also like to thank the other team members, Issac, Beth and Nate, who helped make this a successful event.

Meatless Monday is a nonprofit public health initiative in association with the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Launched in 2003, the goal of Meatless Monday is to cut saturated fat intake, which in turn reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. Going meatless one day a week also decreases our carbon footprint and saves precious resources like fresh water and fossil fuels.

A special Snowmass memory

Dear Editor:

During the last week of ski season, The Westin Snowmass had the great opportunity to host a very special family for a ski vacation. The Faircloth family, from Douglasville, Ga., was selected by the Jack and Jill Late Stage Cancer Foundation (www.jajf.org) which treats families to WOW! Experiences, giving children who will lose their mom or dad to cancer a timeout to create indispensable memories as a family … while they can.

We reached out to the community to assist us in providing a fantastic experience for this deserving family, and everyone we approached stepped up without hesitation. Collectively, we were able to create that special family memory here in Snowmass for the Faircloths.

We would like to extend a huge thank you to the Aspen Skiing Co., Colorado Mountain Express, Aspen Sports, Suit Yourself, SharpShooter Imaging, Accent on Wildflowers, Ranger Station, and the Little Mammoth Steakhouse.

This was a truly inspiring way for us to end our first ski season, and we are extremely proud to be a part of Snowmass Village and such a giving community. Thank you.
