Kudos and Kindness

A valuable moment

Thank you to all who attended and supported Aspen’s community-event screening of John Heminway’s “Battle for the Elephants” on March 22 at the Wheeler Opera House.

By being interested in this important issue and wanting to save these magnificent animals who are under assault for their precious ivory, we can and are making a difference.

Thrift Shop generosity

In March, the Aspen Poets’ Society, Ink, was awarded a very generous grant from The Thrift Shop of Aspen. We are most thankful for its support. The money will help with the cost of printing and marketing “A Democracy of Poets of the Roaring Fork Valley and Beyond,” our first anthology. This has been a very exciting endeavor for the Aspen Poets’ Society and was made possible only through the volunteer efforts of all the poets represented in the book, the editors and the publisher — a true labor of love for poetry.

The anthology made its debut Friday at the fourth annual Karen Chamberlain Poetry Festival. Look for it throughout the valley. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be used to support the programs of the Aspen Poets’ Society and will ensure its viability as the only nonprofit group solely dedicated to promoting the writing of original poetry and to providing a consistent venue in Aspen where the spoken word can be heard.

Who knows? One day copies of “A Democracy of Poets” may wind up on a shelf at The Thrift Shop of Aspen.

Loads of thanks

Between the Arts Explosion and the Green Is the New Black Fashion Show, the Carbondale Council on Arts and Humanities has accomplished much within the first three months of 2014. We could not have made these things happen without the help of so many people and businesses. Our gratitude is immense.

For Arts Explosion, we thank Roaring Fork Leadership, especially Cory Potter, Jose Miranda, John Verghese, Lisa Cain, Jane Lanter, Sara Nadolny and Deborah Breen for their support, hard work and good ideas to make it the success that it was. Thank you!

We also owe much gratitude to all the artists and businesses that provided the experiences: the Carbondale Clay Center, Thunder River Theatre, the Wyly, Sustainable Settings, Allegria, Rainy Day Designs, Crystal River Ballet, KDNK, Coredination, Shea Harris, Matt Haslett, Robin Paz, Iris Anda, Betty Hoops, Inga Cox and Rachael Gillespie. Lastly, much love to Carbondale Middle School, Rick Holt and Jennifer Lamont for believing in this project. It takes a village to raise a child, and this valley is a great one!

Our thanks are immense for the Green Is the New Black Fashion Extravaganza, as this year’s show may have been the best yet. The production, talent, graphics and clothing were top-notch! But what made this particular show so special to us was the incredible number of folks who wholeheartedly poured their love and energy into this production; it is hard to thank them all here. The models, performers and designers gave so much time, patience and creativity and are the heart of the production.

We also couldn’t pull off such a spectacular performance without our sponsors and the many other helping hands. Special thanks to True Nature, the town of Carbondale, Alpine Bank, The Thrift Shop of Aspen, the Glenwood Springs Post Independent and The Aspen Times, Premier Rentals, Crystal River Spas, Agency of Aspen, Mountain Chevrolet, Alchemy AVSC, Sopris Liquor, KDNK, the Sopris Sun, Blue Tent, Fashion Denver, CLEER, the Third Street Center, Pan and Fork Catering, Gina Cucina, Whole Foods, Dos Gringos, Peppino’s, Zheng/Grind, Town, SAW, Mona Lisa Boutique, Carbondale Recreation, Valley Lumber, Shaboomie Paddleboards, Jazz Aspen/Snowmass, Palisade Bluegrass and Roots Fest, Lyons Folks Fest, 5Point Film Fest, Aspen Film Fest, Evan Gaspar, Shawn Tonozzi, Wick Moses, Maciej Mrotek, Aubrey Hood, John Cohorst, Robin Paz, Sondie Rei, Pete Rich, Jen Catto, Lis Ensminger, Monica Muniz, Jessie Hinker, Brittany Sutherland, Natasha Seedorf, Jason White, Isaac Ellis, Milana Hines, Melanie Finan and Wade Newsom.

Last, but not least, we must thank the production team: Regna Jones, Laura Stover, Deb Colley, Ticah Burrows, Kether Axelrod, Chris Erickson, Justin Kosow, Zeke Eagan, Brian Colley, Dana Ganssle-Ellis and Eric Allen; the dancers: Charlie Abernathy, Brianne Jones, A.J.
