City’s donation to golf tournament gets back to city

The article in Wednesday’s Times about the Sheriff’s Cup golf tournament left unclear a significant detail: the $10,000 donated to Huts For Vets by City Council will be paid back into city coffers by Huts For Vets to cover golf fees required for the Sheriff’s Cup golf tournament in June.

The donation from the city’s general fund and then paid into the golf fund represents a zero-sum transaction for the city. That donation is important, however, because, the funds will allow Huts For Vets to benefit from the golf tournament without starting $10,000 in the hole.

This much needed donation by the City will allow Huts For Vets to bring an additional ten veterans to Aspen for our wilderness healing programs at the 10th Mountain Huts: http://www.hutsforvets.org

This is significant at a time when US veteran suicides average 20-22 per day, and when the suicide rate since the Vietnam War has totaled more than three times the number of names on the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington – over 150,000 suicides.

Huts For Vets has a proven track record for changing lives and, in some cases, saving them, as a Marine Corps veteran wrote following one of our programs:

“This was my first time in the wilds and it was with the best group of veterans I’ve ever been with. Huts For Vets and my fellow warriors saved my life over the last four days together. Finding healing from all the things we’ve experienced could not have happened in a better place.”

Sheriff Joe DiSalvo has offered the influence of his public office – and the proceeds from his golf tournament – for the betterment of the men and women who sacrifice their bodies, minds and spirits to their service.

Showing veterans across the country that Aspen is a community that cares pays dividends far beyond any donation. It is a sign of good will and humanitarian concern at a time when veteran suicides represent a national crisis.

Thank you, Joe DiSalvo! Thank you, Aspen City Council!
