Bomb-building and Aspen Skiing Co.

As usual, Paul Andersen addresses an extremely important matter in his March 13, 2017 column, the question about investing in corporations that harm humans and nature (“Sanitizing your poisoned portfolio,” The Aspen Times).

Considering the pressing moral question about investments addressed in his piece, how will Aspen, the community and visitors, ever come to terms with the fact that the town, many businesses and the ski mountains, are deeply connected with an immoral family-led corporation — the Crowns’ defense contracting firm, General Dynamics — that profits immensely from selling weapons of death. The Crowns could never have amassed the wealth to own Aspen Skiing Co., the largest business operation in Aspen, without selling plenty of bombs first.

How much of the snowy-white fantasy land of Aspen is built at the expense of the red blood-stained cities of Aleppo, Syria, and Mosul, Iraq? Must I reconsider purchasing my season pass next year and stop staying at the Limelight? How far do we go or, more to the point, how much will people give up when there are great benefits and pleasures to dancing with immorality, especially when U.S. society is rooted in, condones, and indeed promotes such behavior?
