Letter: Vote yes on 4A
The Basalt Regional Library is a symbol of all that is good about Basalt. It is one of the most highly-utilized, modern, efficient and well-maintained buildings and operations in the mid-valley. The facility serves a huge cross-section of our population.
After several years of diminishing tax revenue used to fund operations, the library board is proposing to provide a sustainable funding mechanism for the next several years to maintain its high level of service while maintaining a fiscally conservative and responsible reserve fund. Their request to approve a fixed increase of $350,000 per year is very different from other organizations that request an increased mill levy and then do not return the excess when real estate values increase. The library is simply asking to increase the mill levy, as needed, to meet this specific goal. For example, if real estate values go up the actual mill levy may remain the same, or could possibly even go down. In this way, taxpayers are not being asked to indefinitely approve an increased mill levy that the organization may not need in the future.
$.60 per month per $100,000 of assessed valuation comes to $3.00 per month on a $500,000 property. That’s less than the cost of one cup of coffee in many places. Can you do with a little less coffee each month, or a little less library? If you can do without a little bit of coffee then vote “yes” on Ballot Measure 4A.
