Proud to live in Aspen

The Aspen Times’ front-page coverage of the Pitkin County commissioners’ passage of pro-immigrant resolution designating our county a sanctuary county was a thorough and thoughtful account.

I want to add I am grateful for being present Wednesday afternoon, sitting with members of the Latino community, as Undersheriff Ron Ryan — dressed not in uniform but in a suit befitting the tone of the event — read the resolution in English followed by Ximena Hulslander reading the document in Spanish. The following comments by the public and the commissioners expressed deep appreciation, respect, community and apology. Eyes were not dry and joy was palpable. “This was not about the money.”

It was government in articulate, respectful action. Government for the good of all members of our community. A community united, not at odds. I feel most proud to say this is my home.
