Letter: Without historical merit

Paul Anderson’s claim Monday in The Aspen Times that Jesus was a Palestinian is without historical merit. Jesus was a Judean living in Judah just a few decades prior to the once-mighty kingdom’s destruction at the hands of the Roman Empire. The term “Palestinian” was introduced by the Romans approximately 100 years after Jesus’ death and derives its name from the Philistines. The Philistines were a Mediterranean sea-faring people who bear no relations to Jesus or the Palestinians of today. Thus, Jesus would never had identified himself as a Palestinian. I think we can all agree that in a land awash with legitimate connections between the religious and the political spheres that we do not need to add any illegitimate connections.
