Letter: Voting for sensibility in Basalt

The decision for mayor is really simple — it depends on how much you want to ruin Basalt. Rick Stevens is a great guy. Go get a ski lesson from him. But know this: He is pro-development to the point of trying to give zillionaire developers millions in sales tax money. His defense for that is we must help developers (“partnerships”) in order to get sales tax to pay for other things in town. That is worn-out, 1970s-style, suburbanite planning. He and his guys have always been willing to waive affordable-housing requirements and building-height requirements and help developers any way they can.

His campaign has been scaring people with the idea that Mayor Jacque Whitsitt would cause taxes to “skyrocket.” They blame her for everything wrong in town, including the divide over the Pan and Fork. Sadly, these tactics tend to work.

Four hundred voters told the Town Council they wanted a different direction for the new park. (Last election, fewer than 500 people voted.) Stevens turned his back on them. Jacque wanted to give them a voice.

There are candidates who have proven they are for growth that helps regular people. They believe development should benefit all of our neighbors. Growth is going to happen. They’re “sensible growth,” not “no growth.”

Please join me in voting for Whitsitt, Jenn Riffle and Katie Schwoerer.

What if all “activists” became entrepreneurs, and the propagation of division through fear-mongering no longer became a factor because the products created were better than what came before and therefore didn’t necessitate discussions of morality.…
