Letter: Unfair labels

In supporting Referendum 1, Marcella Larsen employs the same old, tired tactics trying to make it into an us-against-them, small-against-big, rich-versus-poor argument — scare them with untruths (“Restore responsible governance, planning to Aspen,” Letters to the Editor, The Aspen Times, April 30). She throws some professions out there like somehow their job makes them bad or self-serving. Of course, she doesn’t disclose her profession: attorney. Won’t there be more demand for attorney services if Referendum 1 is passed? Am I saying she is doing this to feather her own nest? No, of course not, and she shouldn’t imply it about other good, hardworking people in hospitality and real estate-related professions, either.

She suggests that being against the measure means being pro-development. Nonsense. I am against it because it takes decision-making out of the hands of the City Council and puts it in the hands of the public. It allows developers the opportunity to wage massive promotional campaigns (who oversees those ads?) to win a vote, and I think the public is more susceptible to that kind of approach than the council.

Let’s not make zoning about who has the best public-relations department and budget. Elect who you trust, and trust them to do the job. Vote “no” on Referendum 1.

Kimbo for Aspen City Council

Vote for Kimbo Brown-Schirato for council. She’s the right choice at the right time for Aspen. She listens, works extremely well with others, and she’s effective.
