Letter: Trying to redefine foreign workers

Big-money contributors are trying to get our House of Representatives to pass a bill that allows tens of thousands more unskilled foreign workers into the country.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies, “said the bill is designed to help industries that donate to lawmakers at the expense of American workers,” according to USA Today (“Congress considers bringing in more foreign workers to fill seasonal jobs,” Nov. 12).

“The name of the bill is Orwellian because it’s … redefining long-term, quasi-permanent guest workers as seasonal workers,” Krikorian told the paper. “It’s designed to import more competition for American workers at a time when the proportion of the workforce that actually has a job is the lowest it has been in a generation.”

The House bill requires employers to attest that they have tried to recruit Americans before they hire foreign workers. The bill says nothing about paying a living wage, nor does it make any provisions for returning these “temporary” workers to their home countries.

I wonder how much money Aspen Skiing Co. and Aspen have bribed — oops, I mean donated — to our elected representatives so they can continue to pay non-living wages to people who aren’t supposed to be here.
