Letter: Thoughts are with Standing Rock
Daily I think about the hundreds of First Nations People and their supporters being brutalized with military style weaponry and high-pressure water cannons in subzero temperatures and getting nailed with rubber bullets, tear gas and pepper spray, all the while they’re protesting the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline that is to lie north of the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation.
People care deeply about their water; you care about yours, yes, no? I would defend my inalienable right to clean water and clean air for its own sake, for myself, my community and for future generations, and I would venture most people would as well if their cherished water source was going to be irreparably contaminated. It’s a no-brainer.
Micro: While it may not be protocol or convenient for Energy Transfer Partners, the owners of the Dakota Access Pipeline to move the pipeline route, they have the financial means to do so. It would be the honorable thing to do in this most egregious of circumstances.
Macro: Mother Earth’s resources are so finite, when will big industry stop digging in the earth and leaving behind barren and wasted lands and contaminated aquifers and figure out how to use the sun and other renewable energy sources?
Some humans act as if the Earth and all her precious resources are for their benefit, as if there’s an inexhaustible supply. There is not. As we tend to our friends, families and animals, we also must tend well the Earth.
It is my wish that this sometimes dirty tug of war, tug of ideals and principals between the common people desiring quality of life and healthy and prosperous lands will find common ground in which to respectfully dialogue with public land managers and natural resource developers in creating a national land preservation act so as to protect and preserve in perpetuity dedicated public lands. No toucha. Future generations will be most grateful for our foresight.
