Letter: The sniper shouldn’t be a hero

The popularity of “American Sniper” saddens me, as Chris Kyle, whom the movie is based on, is a murderer (sniper) with 160 confirmed (witnessed) kills during his four tours in Iraq. Contrary to the Bush/Cheney media propaganda, Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. No Iraqis had killed Americans nor did Saddam Hussein threaten to attack America. Prior to the U.S. invasion of Iraq, al-Qaida was not there. This was a war of aggression against the Iraqi people, which is illegal under international law. Nazis were executed at Nuremberg for such wars.

We killed thousands of Iraqis, destroyed their homes, infrastructure and businesses, created more than a million refugees and left their country in shambles. We killed them for justifiably resisting our invasion, not for protecting Americans or American freedoms. It is despicable how U.S. soldiers treated and tortured Iraqis. Our goal was to overthrow the Iraq government and install a pro-American government that would open up oil fields and other business opportunities to U.S. companies.

I met with Iraqi refugees in Jordan and Syria in 2006 to hear their sad stories.

The movie celebrates guns, racism and the military while disregarding facts, compassion and critical thinking.
