Letter: The happy violinist
His joy in the music spills out with every phrase, every run, every pause. Gil Shaham smiled at the conductor, smiled at the musicians, smiled at the audience and smiled inside himself while he played that bear of a concerto by Bela Bartok, one that I never cared for before I heard Shaham play it. His joy was irrepressible; he couldn’t contain it. Even Bartok must have been smiling in his grave. What a gift we had on Saturday! Thank you, Gil Shaham, we share your joy!
