Letter: Tax increase too high

Thanks for informing us what a great place Aspen and Pitkin County are to live in. I agree! However, paying my property tax bill becomes increasingly more difficult each year. As the county grows, so does my tax bill!

Can’t you guys do some belt-tightening? For seniors on a fixed income, a property tax increase of 11 percent is tough. The $100,000 senior exemption is a joke. Yes, it works just fine in rural Colorado, but not in Aspen! So give us a real tax break. How about a local’s discount of 1 percent per year (maximum of 50 percent) for each year of occupancy at the same location? I know — it won’t fly! But you guys make the big bucks, so think about us poor folks paying your salaries.

Yes, I know! “You’re from Aspen? You must be rich!”
