Support Aspen’s student-athletes

For well over 20 years, I have contributed to the $500 college scholarship award given annually by Aspen High School. It is called the Coaches Achievement Award, and it was created to remember Jimmy Ross. He was a resident of Aspen, transplanted from New York and a devoted skier but also a college football player who was at his death the unpaid assistant coach of the Aspen High football team.

The award is given to the student showing the foremost athletic ability while at the same time achieving excellence in their studies.

This year the award went to a boy whose college choice is Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Hearing all the news these days about student debt, I wondered what the cost of a year at Dartmouth College was. I looked it up, and the tuition alone I found to be $43,782. Add to that the cost of housing, food, books and transportation home for vacations and school terms, and it’s another $25,000.

Unfortunately, all the other friends of Jimmy Ross here have passed away, but my wife and I continue to pay for all the award. Maybe you would help as well. You can help by sending a contribution to the Jimmy Ross Scholarship Fund at Vectra Bank here in Aspen. Maybe then we can increase the size of the award to be more meaningful to the future recipients.
