Letter: Subterranean ideals

Dear Editor:

Everything has its time and place as the currents of time move forward. The moment has arrived for what Susan O’Neal presented to the Aspen City Council in the recent past.

O’Neal resurrected the many-decades-old idea of a Wagner Park underground parking garage.

Many informed Aspenites recall the concept bandied around for so many years. Terry Butler, of the boutique downtown Hotel Residence, first heard about it 45 years ago. Newspaper columnist and certified public accountant Roger Marolt mentioned that the notion was around before he was born.

Former Aspen Mayor Bill Stirling knew about the Wagner Park subterranean-garage proposal many years before when, as mayor, he fast-tracked the Rio Grande public parking garage. His preferred proposal was to build parking garages on both the east and west outskirts of town with no automobile traffic in Aspen.

By the way, John Sarpa knew about the dream of a subterranean parking facility at Wagner Park, too.

O’Neal’s effort would allow less congestion, more parking spaces, easier retail shopping, more fun eating at restaurants and a surge in retail tax revenue for City Hall.

Sensible Aspenites, the banking and financial sector and the business community should invite O’Neal to speak with them in public and private meetings.

Let’s get busy on it.
